US says it backed 'partner forces' in Iraq, Syria during weeklong anti-ISIS operations

WASHINGTON

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Wednesday that it supported "partner forces" in Iraq and Syria between May 21 and 27 as part of ongoing efforts to defeat ISIS (Daesh).

CENTCOM said its forces supported six counter-ISIS (D-ISIS) operations -- five in Iraq and one in Syria -- resulting in two ISIS operatives being killed, the detention of two more, including a senior ISIS leader, and the recovery of multiple weapons.

The operations were aimed at disrupting ISIS’s ability to reconstitute, coordinate, and carry out attacks targeting civilians and coalition forces, it added.

The US and members of the multinational Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) maintain the ongoing commitment to the fight against the terror group, it said.

"Operations like these underscore the commitment of USCENTCOM, along with our allies and partners, to the enduring defeat of ISIS in the region," said CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla in the statement.
